We may not have observed, but coach Kwesi Appiah is perhaps the most peaceful, yet vilified man around Ghana football. Lampooned by Ayew’s family anytime he tries to exercise authority and ‘discipline’ them. He’s called names by key Ayew aides.
Allegations of him taking revenge against their dad and all that, he shakes his head and swallowed. Rumours of him favoring/pampering Asamoah Gyan bla bla bla he overlook.
A lot have questioned Gyan’s leadership abilities. Appiah takes captaincy from Gyan and gives to Ayew. Ayew’s camp is silent.
Gyan’s “family” all out in daggers. Insult Kwesi, spit on his competence, question his reasoning and threaten to expose him. Gyan eventually quit via and eplosive statement in a clear undermine of Kwesi’s authority.
But Kwesi is still silent. For the sake of peace.
Gyan rescinds and returns. Kwesi welcomes him into team, and into his office for camaraderie photos. For the sake of peace and unity.
Brazil coach takes captaincy from Neymar without discussing with Neymar, Brazil coach is courageous and professional.
The Kwesi who discussed transition with Gyan, and showed maximum respect, is rather a bad manager. Not read messages of Tite (Brazil coach) betraying Neymar.
Yet to read pieces on why Neymar (worth $250million) and Brazil’s third all-time top scorer- behind legends Pele and Ronaldo0 deserves respect.
We all see Mourinho Pogba, Ferguson Beckham, Pep Yaya etc. But it is Kwesi trying to manage one of the fierce yet subtle traditional captaincy feuds in football. In the end, he agrees to take all the blame, the shots, the vile attacks and insults. Never a word. For the sake of peace.
Yet he’s the most incompetent manager we’ve ever had. Because he never talks. Never lays blames on his players. Never exposes their indiscipline and weaknesses to the public. Tries to cover his players at the expense of his dignity.
Yet it is same players and their so-called management always ridiculing the integrity of this man.
When he wins big, the game was “bought” for him, when he loses, he is grossly incompetent. He never had media spats and clashes. Just takes everything unto himself and that’s that.
We have been in this village long enough, and seen ones from elsewhere without respect, without dignity, without integrity, without competence, without class and without tactical finesse. But received all of that from us, plus money.
Kwesi Appiah may not be your tactical genius, but let’s not vilify him because he is “local”.
And this, particularly to the players he coaches, some of whom ridicule him because they know he won’t sell them out to the public. When you retire, you may also become a LOCAL coach.
