Blueberries are tasty as well as nutritious! Studies show that consuming a cup of blueberries can lower your cardiovascular risks, Increasing your metabolism. What can be more advantageous to have something that is delicious as well as healthy?
Various universities have carried out their researches in their own way to know the health benefits. The United States HighBush Councils have funded studies to know the actual potential benefits of blueberries. The University of East Anglia in the UK tied up with Havard University to carry researches. All the studies and researches aimed at knowing whether regular consumption can affect metabolic syndrome.
Metabolic syndrome describes various conditions like high blood pressure, fats around waist-line, abnormal cholesterol and also the triglyceride levels. All these factors increase the risk of heart diseases! Now almost one-third of the globe are affected by these very problems which are gradually becoming a global epidemic.
Blueberries are high in anthocyanins
Studies say that consuming blueberries regularly can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Blueberries are rich in anthocyanins. These are water-soluble pigments and appear as red, black, blue or even purple in colour. They are present plant tissues – the stems, flowers, leaves, and roots and also in fruits. Recent studies have been found claiming that anthocyanins also helps to fight cancer.
Previous studies have linked the increased consumption of anthocyanin with reducing mortality risk while recent studies found that it helps in reducing the cardiovascular risks.
Though these studies have been very limited and no randomized trials have been carried out among the population where there is a higher risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular risks. Researches are being carried out to find whether having blueberries can help people who are already diagnosed with such diseases. Blueberry powder was tested upon a group of 115 people, age between 50-75. All of them are either obese or have metabolic syndrome.
Scientist believed to run a test by providing dietary achievable levels of blueberries to them. These people were divided into three groups and various proportions were provided to them
The first group was provided with powder equivalent to one cup of blueberries.
The second group was provided with a lesser amount equivalent to half a cup of blueberries
The third and the final group was given with a different kind of powder which looked liked the blueberry ones but mainly contained dextrose, maltodextrin, and fructose.
The experiment ran for about six months. At the starting and end of the trial, the people were assessed with biomarkers for insulin resistance, vascular functions.
Results showed that people who consumed about one cup of blueberries had visible improvements in vascular functions and arterial stiffness, resulting in a reduction of cardiovascular risk by 12 -15%, a major change. But interestingly visible changes were only among the people consuming a single cup, and no such change for those who consumed lesser amount.
It was concluded that higher intake is necessary for improving heart health and obesity or any other metabolic syndrome. At the same time, it is worth noticing that the intervention of blueberries into our diet didn’t affect the other parameters measured earlier. The intervention of blueberries have no favourable effects on blood pressure or other vascular functions.
Benefits of having blueberries
The cardiovascular benefits seen among the people are mainly due to the presence of anthocyanins in blueberries. The body metabolizes the anthocyanins in the lower intestine producing various other chemicals which in turn affects the metabolic role.
The syringic acid produced is a chemical that metabolizes the anthocyanin production and benefits the vascular endothelial tissues. Moreover, if you are looking for Tata steel recruitment then it could be the best chance to try it
Another research found that vanillic acid, another breakdown product of anthocyanin reduces hypertension (though experimented on rats)
In the end, it is worth mentioning, that there are other foods also containing anthocyanin, which includes blackcurrants, red raspberries, red cabbage, radish, purple sweet potatoes, and many others.
Although this experiment was the first long term experiment carried over 115 participants, and only 37 participants remained in the group having a visible effect on their heart health consuming one cup of blueberries per day and hence more researches are likely to follow.
Blueberries are considered to be a healthy addition to your diet as most of the other fruits and vegetables. However further studies will be carried out on a larger scale to confirm the real benefits of consuming blueberries on a regular basis.
